CRIMINAL PROFILING - TRUE CRIME

The Jigsaw Man
Paul Britton
(1997)
480 Pages

The only criminal profiling - true crime book that I have found that is written by an actual psychologist.  This book provides a deeper look at the psychological processes underlying criminal behaviour profiling.  The criminal mind and his motivations are looked at with much greater detail then any of the other novels.  Interestingly Dr. Britton's profiling technique is not unlike that of the FBI's behavioural science unit.  While their modern procedures came from extensive case studies and experience, Britton's venture into this domain came up with a virtually identical method based entirely on his psychological background.  A fact that suggests profiling is indeed a psychological enterprise.  If you are interested in learning about criminal profiling as a component of psychology this book is a better introduction for you then the Douglas & Ressler titles.

Mindhunter:
Inside the FBI'S Elite Serial Crime Unite
John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
(1997)
384 Pages

The best american true-crime/biography novelization of criminal profiling I've ever read (and I've read them all).  This book will give you the basics and origins of profiling techniques (the first known american case of profiling will absolutely amaze you), as well as introduce you to the key players of the FBI's Behavioural Science unit (See fellow BSU member ROBERT K. RESSLER below).  This book alone is what peaked my interest and ultimately my decision to enter the realm of forensic psychology.

Journey Into Darkness:
The FBI's Premier Investigator Penetrates the Minds and Motives of the Most Terrifying Serial Killers
John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
(1997)

The sequel to Douglas's Mindhunter provides much improved organization of  information regarding his profiling techniques (still don't get it confused as a text book, see the Crime Classification Manual for that).  Also less time is used for his biographical information, and thus more profiling is described. This book will be of particular interest to Canadian's due to its several chapters on Douglas's work for canadian authorities.

Unabomber:
On the Trail of America's Most-Wanted Serial Killer
John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
(1996)

Though this book is primarily about a single criminal, it does provide a comprehensive introduction to assassination and bomber type criminals.  Since the book focuses primarily on the unabomber you will receive a much more comprehensive look into Douglas's techniques then was ever before available.  As well, the book does have a lengthy discussion about the U.S.'s first known use of profiling against New York's Mad Bomber.

Obsession:
The Fbi's Legendary Profiler Probes the Psyches of Killers, Rapists, and Stalkers and Their Victims and Tells How to Fight Back
John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
(1998)
528 Pages

Obsession is vital reading for anyone seeking to understand and prevent violent crime. In Obsession, Douglas once again takes us fascinatingly behind the scenes, focusing his expertise on predatory crimes, primarily against women. With a deep sense of compassion for the victims and an uncanny understanding of the perpetrators, Douglas looks at the obsessions that lead to rape, stalking, and sexual murder. He plumbs the minds and motives of those who commit these terrifying and seemingly inexplicable offenses.
But Douglas also looks at obsession on the other side of the moral spectrum: his own career-long obsession with hunting these predators; the obsession of the directors of a model police department's victim's program in Virginia that has literally saved the lives of survivors; and the obsession of a brilliant young lawyer who has established an innovative school in Harlem to combat crime, drugs, and despair.
In a final section that serves as a call to action, Douglas shows us how we can all fight back and protect ourselves, our families, and loved ones against the scourge of the violent predators in our midst. But the first step is insight and understanding, and no one is better qualified to penetrate obsession than John Douglas.

Whoever Fights Monsters
Robert K. Ressler & Tom Shachtman
(1993)
386 Pages

Another great introduction to criminal profiling in the true crime novel format.  Ressler is one of the worlds top independent criminal profilers and was a former FBI behavioural science unit profiler.  His texts run along similar lines as John Douglas's but provided you with unique case history's that he alone was a part of.

I Haved Lived in the Monster
Robert K. Ressler & Tom Shachtman
(1998)
400 Pages

In this follow-up to "Whoever Fights Monsters", a former FBI senior investigator takes us further into the subject of law enforcement's fight against serial killers. He claims to have "lived in the monster" enough to understand the killers who prey upon modern society and to convey to us the mind of the murderer. The largest part of this book examines in depth the cases in which Ressler has been involved since he retired from the FBI, a period in which he has been consulted by police departments and psychologists all over the world with difficult and mysterious murders.
