The only criminal profiling - true crime book that I have found that is written by an actual psychologist.  This book provides a deeper look at the psychological processes underlying criminal behaviour profiling.  The criminal mind and his motivations are looked at with much greater detail then any of the other novels.  Interestingly Dr. Britton's profiling technique is not unlike that of the FBI's behavioural science unit.  While their modern procedures came from extensive case studies and experience, Britton's venture into this domain came up with a virtually identical method based entirely on his psychological background.  A fact that suggests profiling is indeed a psychological enterprise.  If you are interested in learning about criminal profiling as a component of psychology this book is a better introduction for you then the Douglas & Ressler titles.

The best true-crime/biography novelization of criminal profiling I've ever read (and I've read them all).  This book will give you the basics and origins of profiling techniques (the first known american case of profiling will absolutely amaze you), as well as introduce you to the key players of the FBI's Behavioural Science unit (See fellow BSU member ROBERT K. RESSLER below).  This book alone is what peaked my interest and ultimately my decision to enter the realm of forensic psychology.

THIS BOOK  IS AVAILABLE IN: HARDCOVER  for $16.80 (30% off),  PAPERBACK  for $5.59 (20% off), and on AUDIO-CASSETTE   for $11.90 (30% off)

Journey into Darkness: The FBI's Premier Investigator Penetrates the Minds and Motives of the Most Terrifying Serial Killers.  By: Douglas, J. & Olshaker, M.

A MIKES TOP PICK!

The sequel to Douglas's Mindhunter provides much improved organization of  information regarding his profiling techniques (still don't get it confused as a text book, see the Crime Classification Manual below).  also less time is used for his biographical information, and thus more profiling is described. This book will be of particular interest to canadian's due to its several chapters on Douglas's work for canadian authorities.

THIS BOOK  IS AVAILABLE IN:  HARDCOVER  for $17.50 (30% off), PAPERBACK  for $5.59 (20% off), AUDIO-CASSETTE   for $12.60 (30% off)

Douglas, J., & Olshaker, M.  (1996).  UNABOMBER: On the Trail of America's Most-Wanted Serial Killer.

Though this book is primarily about a single criminal, it does provide a comprehensive introduction to assassination and bomber type criminals.  Since the book focuses primarily on the unabomber you will receive a much more comprehensive look into Douglas's techniques then was ever before available.  As well, the book does have a lengthy discussion about the U.S.'s first known use of profiling against New York's Mad Bomber.

THIS BOOK IS UNAVAILABLE VIA MY DEALER, IT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE!

Obsession : The Fbi's Legendary Profiler Probes the Psyches of Killers, Rapists, and Stalkers and Their Victims and Tells How to Fight Back.  BY: JOHN DOUGLAS

Douglas again takes us into the fantastic realm of criminal profiling.  This time focusing on the criminal obsessive personality types seen in many cases of stalking, rape, other sex crimes, and murder.  As usual Douglas provides us with a surreal novelization and introspection in to this highly disturbing world.

THIS BOOK  IS AVAILABLE IN: HARDCOVER  for $18.20 (30% off) & AUDIO TAPE for $12.60 (30% off)

  Ressler, R. K., & Shachtman, T.  (1992).  Whoever fights monsters.

Another great introduction to criminal profiling in the true crime novel format.  Ressler is one of the worlds top independent criminal profilers and was a former FBI behavioural science unit profiler.  His texts run along similar lines as John Douglas's but provided you with unique case history's that he alone was a part of.

THIS BOOK  IS AVAILABLE IN: HARDCOVER  for $16.07 (30% off), PAPERBACK  for $4.79 (20% off)

     Ressler, R. K., & Shachtman, T.  (199?).  I have lived in the monster.

The second of Ressler's book.  This work really builds on his previous texts.  The case studies are just as interesting.  Together the two books really make you realize how fantastic a career Ressler has had.

THIS BOOK  IS AVAILABLE IN: HARDCOVER  for $16.07 (30% off), PAPERBACK  for $5.20 (20% off).

Practical Homicide Investigation, Editor: Geberth
A MIKE'S COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT PICK!

Granted it is one expensive book.  And yes its one big book (could hold things down in a tornado).  However it is likely the most important book the criminal profiler - forensic specialist will ever have.  It comprehensively and scientifically looks at every important aspect of crime scene analysis.  In fact this text is used by many profiling schools as their main educational tool.  I couldn't live without it!

This book is available in HARDCOVER only, for $69.95
A field guide to practical homicide investigation is available in SOFT COVER for $24.95

Douglas, Burgess, Burgess, and Ressler. (1997)  Crime Classification Manual.
A MIKES COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT PICK!

This is the DSM of crime scene analysis.  Authored by previous FBI behavioural profilers and their colleagues, this manual takes a scientific approach to categorizing and analyzing crimes.   This (along with Practical Homicide Investigation) is quite possibly the most important book to ever exist regarding Criminal Profiling... and a bonus, its relatively cheap.

This book is available in PAPERBACK (its large) for $32.95

     Ressler, R. R., Douglas, J. E., & Burgess, A.  Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives.
A MIKES MUST HAVE #1 PICK!

This text is the culmination of dozens and dozens of prison interviews performed by the FBI's behavioural science unit.  This first attempt to conceptualize and organize criminal profiling is what really made the FBI's BSU what it is today.  In my opinion this is one of the most important texts any potential profiler could ever read.  It systematically sets out the foundations by which the criminal mind is created and how we can understand such a mind.

This book is available in HARDCOVER for $39.95, and PAPERBACK for $25.00

Holmes & Holmes - Profiling Violent Crimes.
A MIKES TOP PICK!

I have only had a chance to skim through vol. 1 of this text.  I was concerned about its lack of detail and scientific analysis.  However, Vol. 2 (the one available here) has included more then 100 additional pages, many of which have resolved some of my original issues.  Overall this text is a good guide to the processes behind criminal profiling.  This book is an excellent introduction to the science behind profiling.  I used this as a stepping stone from that knowledge gained in the layman's books such as 'Mindhunter' up to the more intricate "Crime Classification Manual" & "Practical Homicide Investigation"

This book is available in PAPERBACK for $23.95

Kurland - How to Solve a Murder: The Forensic Handbook

A very good introduction to general forensic crime scene analysis (not profiling).  When your done with the book you will no longer be a layman!  I especially enjoyed the section that described every single forensics related discipline in existence.  Do you know what area of forensic involves the study of insects to identify body decay and dumping sights?  You will once you've read this!

This book is available in PAPERBACK for $11.96 (20% off)!

Malmquist, C. P. (1996).  Homicide: A Psychiatric Perspective.  Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Press.

This text has a goal, to provide a psychiatric perspective on homicide.  Complete with comprehensive diagnostic categories for different types of homicide, this text may has become an extremely relevant source regarding criminal profiling.

This book is available in HARDCOVER for $45.00.
